Roland Systems Group U.S is now shipping the S-1608 Digital Snake System in a fixed 16×8 configuration. The S-1608 adds to the S-4000 Digital Snake system. Based on the same 24-bit/96 kHz low-latency REAC protocol used in the S-4000, the new S-1608 features 16 high-quality, remote-controllable microphone inputs and eight returns over a standard Cat5e cable.

Guitar Center Inc. to Be Acquired by Bain Capital

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA — Guitar Center, Inc. today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by affiliates of Bain Capital Partners, LLC, a global private investment firm. The total transaction value, including assumed debt, is approximately $2.1 billion.

FOH editor Bill Evans commented, “Unlike some other acquisitions recently announced, this does not appear to be a typical Wall Street grab and dash but rather a way to allow the chain to continue to grow without the often unrealistic expectations shareholders can make of a public company. In recent years, GC has grown from the 50 range to more than 200 stores currently and is expected to have well over 300 by next year."

Audio-Technica U.S., Inc. introduced its SpectraPulse Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless microphone system at InfoComm 07.  Although you won't be using this any time soon, a live event version is being worked on; however, there’s no word on when it will be available.

SpectraPulse is designed to deliver clear, intelligible audio without the performance and set-up issues associated with conventional wireless systems. In addition, it is designed to provide high security levels and to be used in conferences or boardrooms, corporate events/meetings, courtrooms and other contractor/system integrator applications in the business, government and commercial markets.

New Tony Awards for Sound

NEW YORK — On June 19, the Tony Awards Administration Committee voted to add two new competitive categories for future Tony Awards ceremonies. The newly announced categories for which the upcoming 2007–2008 season’s productions will be eligible are Best Sound Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Musical. This is the first time the Tonys have recognized sound design along with the other production elements in the competitive categories.

Cal State Fullerton Sounds Great with EAW

FULLERTON, CA — The 800-seat Meng Concert Hall at the new Performing Arts Center at California State University, Fullerton, features a sound reinforcement system designed by Multi-Media Consulting Inc. (MMC) of Los Angeles, incorporating EAW AX Series loudspeakers and SB Series subwoofers. MMC Founding Principal Rick Wells took the lead role in the system design process for Meng Concert Hall, specifying three sets of dual EAW AX366 loudspeakers to provide coverage throughout the room.
