SHEPPERTON, U.K. — It is with sadness that we announce the death of friend and colleague John Roden, Paul McCarthey's long-time monitor engineer. The funeral will take place in Surrey, U.K. The family has asked that donations be made to the Shooting Star Children’s Hospice.

Big issues, no resolves

Every now and then you end up doing a show where the band are pricks out the gate & there is no resolve . . .

We do about 400 shows a year, so I guess we are lucky we don't get it all of the time. The funny thing is, it’s usually the "lower end bands"

We work with this country singer, she was real famous in the late 70s & thru the 80s. She has fallen (not so gracefully) since. From arenas to Indian casino bingo rooms, relentless bitch from start to finish. You know — she won’t show up to sound check, doesn't tell her band to check her guitar or vocal mic, walks on stage and begins threatening the monitor guy for the rest of the night. Making bitchy digs on the mic all night long . . .

This is the first time for FOH (and, indeed, for any audio magazine that I can think of) to do an actual in-the-field Road Test on a piece of gear with a $90K price tag. Because we have worked at making and maintaining good relations with regional sound companies, we were able to hook up with a company that was demo-ing the eagerly awaited Vi6 digital console from Soundcraft. This is not something we could have pulled off on our own so we need to start off by thanking the crew at H.A.S. Productions in Las Vegas for making it possible. It took some doing and some coordination — including an overnight trip to the bustling metropolis of Parker, Ariz. — but it was worthwhile. (BTW, to you other manufacturers reading this, we are open to other Road Tests following this method. You have my number, give me a call.)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Sports Technology Alliance, formed by the Sports Video Group and comprised of major professional and collegiate U.S. sports leagues and major national broadcasters and content distributors, met this week with leading members of the Federal Communications Commission and members of the Senate and House of Representatives. The group's mission was to discuss the negative impact of certain current proposed "white spaces" wireless spectrum legislation with regards to athlete and fan safety at their events and the quality of live event coverage, broadcast production and the reception of digital television signals.
