In Memoriam: David “Dopp” Colvin, 64

ATLANTA – Dixie Dregs’ sound engineer David “Dopp” Colvin passed away sometime during the early hours of Feb. 1, 2018 – just a few days before his 65th birthday. Colvin was found sitting in his beloved boat, the Spanish Moon, which was docked at a local marina, and the death was apparently from natural causes.

A longtime fixture in the Atlanta music scene, Colvin was equally skilled mixing genres such as rock, country, jazz and blues, going back to his early gigs at the city’s legendary Agora Ballroom, which eventually closed in 1983. Bands that Colvin worked with at that time included The Dixie Dregs, R.E.M. and U2, leading him to go on the road to mix FOH with R.E.M. on its 1984 to 1985 “Little America” world tour. But the band that Colvin became most closely associated with was The Dregs, which continued through the present, when the band announced an upcoming reunion “Dawn of the Dregs” national tour that kicks off February 28, 2018 and was slated to include members of its original crew, including Colvin at FOH.

As of presstime, there was no information on memorial services.
