DELRAY BEACH, FL — The Huntington Pointe Theater, nestled in scenic Delray Beach — a small coastal southeast Florida town about 50 miles north of Miami — recently underwent a comprehensive renovation. Originally constructed in 1991, this 700-seat venue received a complete overhaul with a focus on user-friendliness. The main design objective was clear: “Create systems that are adaptable for all needs, easily operable via touchscreens accessible to anyone.” To realize this vision, the integration expertise of Hospitality Multi-Media (Oakland Park, FL) was enlisted. HM’s selection was based on the company’s solid track record in theater design, having completed over 100 similar projects.
The entire theater, from system activation to control, is seamlessly managed through STRAND wall-mounted touch screens, strategically placed backstage and in the control booth. Furthermore, audio, stage lighting and house lighting can be controlled via Strand’s NEO Remote app.
In speaking with the patrons, it was frequently mentioned that several seats were much quieter than others, and the last few rows didn’t sound clear as the front seating. To ensure optimal coverage, Hospitality Multi-Media employed EASE audio prediction software, to guarantee a crisp, clear sound experience for every seat in the house. HM also chose an impressive 11-box DAS Audio speaker system, in three VANTEC 20A arrays with flown VANTEC 118A subwoofers. These are preconfigured for both cinematic presentations (L/C/R 7:1) and typical live show reinforcement (L/R).
Hospitality Multi-Media developed its relationship with DAS several years ago, when researching options to the classic point-and-shoot systems of the day. A day listening to various setups in the DAS demo room and teaching facility convinced HM engineers that DAS was the way to go.
In cinema mode, controlled by a convenient dbx wall plate selector, an array of eight QSC surround speakers, cleverly integrated with the house lighting sconces, offers a rich 7:1 audio experience. A 40-channel Midas console takes the lead, and can be controlled from the Midas M-AIR app in house. The Midas stage box inputs an assortment of Shure wired mics and eight Shure ULX-D wireless systems.
One of the theater’s previous challenges was inadequate sound articulation. System designer Richard LaVoir collaborated closely with Perdue Acoustics to address this issue. After meticulous measurements and treatments, the reverb time was reduced from 3.25 to 1.25 seconds in the 250 Hz range, utilizing Perdue MegaWedge products. The system was installed exactly to the EASE coordinates, and coverage proved to be within +/- 1 dB throughout the venue. Equalization was equally as simple, the speakers performed great utilizing the onboard DSP, and very minor house EQ corrections had to be made. After the transformation, improved spoken word clarity and cinema dialog were greatly enhanced.
The stage lighting setup includes color-changing leko spots by Gamma from Etnia and 18-element LED fresnel wash lights. These are effortlessly controlled via an Etnia “Light Shark” console in the control booth. In cinematic mode, a powerful Digital Projection 18,000-lumen projector illuminates a 300-inch motorized Draper projection screen, which can also be controlled remotely.
HM co-owner Brent Flanagan, AV systems tech Kyle Page and systems design engineer Ricky LaVoir working with Hospitality Multi-Media, playing crucial roles in this project. Their collaboration on Huntington Pointe was essential in bringing the project’s vision to life. Flanagan’s leadership and Page’s technical expertise as part of the Hospitality Multi-Media team assured the project’s success, creating an outstanding AV experience that exceeded expectations.
