FORT WORTH, TX — The 13th-largest city in the United States, with a population of 900,000, Fort Worth is known for Texas hospitality and a dozen remarkable districts full of culture and fun. Fort Worth is where the West begins, and nothing embodies Western heritage better than the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. From the original brick walkways to the wooden corrals, every inch of the Stockyards tells the true history of Texas’ famous livestock industry.
The historic western Stockyards District is a mecca for tourists, but also draws steady crowds of locals. Besides featuring the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive, the weekly Stockyards Championship Rodeos at the Cowtown Coliseum, Billy Bob’s Texas (the world’s largest honky-tonk), the National Cowgirl Museum and dozens of shops and eateries, the district is home to Filthy McNasty’s Saloon, which has been a part of Fort Worth’s western heritage and local music scene for over three generations.
Located one block west of Main Street in the heart of the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards, the saloon was built 102 years ago. A high-traffic tourist destination and a haven for music lovers, the business has operated under the “Filthy McNasty’s Saloon” name since 1978, featuring dancing and live, no-cover-charge performances.
New sound installations don’t happen every day in a music venue within a 100+ year-old historic district and DFW Speaker Repair (www.dfwspeakerrepair.com) recently outfitted Filthy McNasty’s Saloon with a new P.A. system consisting of Yorkville Sound gear, from the company’s powered Synergy, Paraline and Parasource lines.
The mains are in left/right hangs, each with two Yorkville Paraline Series PSA1 active full range loudspeaker systems, which deliver the clarity and precision of a complex line array system in a compact, user-friendly format, with wide 110° horizontal dispersion. Each enclosure has 700 watts of onboard Class-D amplification driving four six-inch cone mid drivers combined with two 1-inch exit compression drivers on the proven Paraline high frequency lens technology pioneered in Yorkville’s flagship VTC Elevation Series line array cabinet. www.dfwspeakerrepair.com
Low frequencies are handled by two SA221S powered (6,000W continuous; 17,000W peak) double-21” subs from Yorkville’s new Synergy Series, each placed vertically on either side of the stage for plenty of bottom end.
Four two-way (12”/1”), powered (1,400W) Yorkville Parasource Series PS12P speakers — using their integrated reinforced fly points to face rearwards — hang over the front of the stage lip to provide ample monitoring for the performers, without taking up valuable real estate on the stage floor.
Filthy McNasty’s owner, Dan Cunningham, chose the P.A. gear with his customers and business in mind: “Lots of things happen at small venues in tourist areas that surprise me. It’s not unusual for other members of well-known bands to come in just to hear good local artists, then feed their experience on to others that it’s a good place to catch good local artists,” Cunningham explains.
“We never have a cover charge and I’m 100% sure having great sound is really appreciated by most all customers. Both go a long way in retaining customers, and customer dwell time is key to our bottom line. It all goes a long way in building a good reputation. Any other recognition — if it happens — is a real plus.”
