“BeatleShow” FOHE Gets By with a Little Help from a Yamaha PM5D

LAS VEGAS — The producers of BeatleShow! didn’t have a time machine to bring audiences back to the British invasion of the 1960s, but they took pains to offer visitors something akin to a genuine Beatles concert, with details ranging from dramatic costumes to stage lighting and, of course, the sound system. Audio engineer Mick McCoy opted for a Yamaha PM5D for the FOH mix.

No Structural Defects Found in 2011 Ottawa Bluesfest Stage Collapse

OTTAWA, Canada – Ontario Ministry of Labor authorities have concluded their investigation of the July 18, 2011 stage collapse of a Groupe Berger-made staging structure during a Cheap Trick performance that injured three people, and determined that there was no evidence of structural issues contributing to the collapse. Instead, the blame for the incident was put on freakish weather, and no individuals or companies are being charged with wrongdoing.

Who’s Your Hometown Hero? Vote Today!

LAS VEGAS — It’s time for FRONT of HOUSE readers to vote for their favorite regional sound companies for the 2012 Hometown Hero Awards competition. The ballot is now online at fohonline.com/hometown. It includes a total of 30 companies — five from five U.S. regions and five more from Canada. All were nominated by FOH readers in June. Voting takes place throughout July. The six regional winners will be announced in August and included on the 2012 Parnelli Awards ballot. The final winner will then receive the 2012 Hometown Hero Sound Company of the Year award at the Parnelli Awards gala, set for Oct. 20, 2012 at the Mirage Resort in Las Vegas.

Avid Selling Consumer Businesses, Will Focus on Pro Audio, Media

BURLINGTON, MA — Avid announced the sale of its consumer business units July 2 to focus on professional audio and digital recording/editing software. The company is selling M-Audio to inMusic and its consumer video division to Corel Corp. for a combined $17 million. Published reports noted the departure of COO Kirk E. Arnold and principal accounting officer Jason G. Burke and a decline in the company’s roster of employees worldwide from 1,750 to 1,400.

San Diego Middle School Graduation Ceremony Heard via Single K-array Speaker

SAN DIEGO — Paul Svenson, owner of PSAudioVideo, provided a single K-array KR400S ultra-light powered speaker, along with Sennheiser ew 100 G3 wireless transmitters and receivers, for the outdoor graduation ceremony at San Diego Bernardo Heights Middle School in mid-June. Svenson, who consulted with Sennheiser area sales manager John R. Borja on the project, ran the microphones directly into a PreSonus digital mixer, which was then connected to the K-array KR 400S.

Brad Madix Mixing Van Halen Tour with Avid VENUE Profile

LOS ANGELES — FOH engineer Brad Madix is using an Avid VENUE system with a Profile surface to support Van Halen on tour. The setup includes four DSP cards and an assortment of plug-ins from Waves, including  the SSL 4000 Collection and API, plus the H-EQ hybrid equalizer and C6 multiband compressor, to help him re-create the sound of the band’s original recordings.
