Tony Awards to Drop Sound Categories?

NEW YORK — On June 8, Brian Ronan and Steve Canyon Kennedy received Tony Awards, respectively, for “Best Sound Design of a Musical” (Beautiful – the Carole King Musical) and “Best Sound Design of a Play” (Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill). On June 11, the American Theatre Wing’s Tony Award Administration Committee announced that both awards categories would be omitted from future Tony Awards ceremonies. The move prompted a considerable amount of shock and dismay in the audio community and beyond.

TOLEDO, OH — For the second annual Spotlight Summer Nights concert series at the open-air amphitheater at the Hollywood Casino here, Great Lakes Sound, Inc. provided RCF line arrays with dB Technologies subwoofers and monitors. The venue, in close proximity to both the Ohio River and an interstate highway, is supporting shows featuring Smokey Robinson, .38 Special, Night Ranger, Travis Tritt, Wilson Phillips, George Thorogood, Pat Benatar, Everclear, Soul Asylum, Chevelle and Robby Krieger’s Jam Kitchen.

Masque Sound Supports Spoleto Festival USA

CHARLESTON, SC — For the 38th annual Spoleto Festival USA, which kicked off here May 23, sound supervisor Lew Mead turned to Masque Sound for an audio package to support the multi-venue celebration, which spans more than two weeks in length. Festival engineer Kate Foretek also spent close to two weeks in the Masque Sound shop, piecing together the various custom equipment packages.
