MANOA, Hawaii — The first annual Manoa Jazz Festival kicked off at the Andrews Outdoor Theatre at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). Local artists including Noel Okimoto Ohana, the Honolulu Jazz Quartet and headliner Devin Phillips and New Orleans Straight Ahead performed for 1,000 excited onlookers, with sound reinforcement from a Meyer Sound M’elodie line array loudspeaker system provided by Honolulu-based Baus Engineering.
 

SINGAPORE — Valerio Maioli SPA was contracted to provide the lighting, CCTV, trusses and public address for the inaugural FORMULA 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix, using JBL VerTec loudspeakers for the sound system.

ENGLAND — ADLIB Audio is supplying sound for the UK leg of Hot Chip’s “Made In the Dark” world tour, debuting their new Lab.gruppen PLM1000 amplifiers used to drive 12 ADLIB MP3 low-profile monitor wedges. ADLIB’s Richy Nicholson (FOH) and Marc Peers (monitors) are working closely with band engineers Steve Revitte and Mary Alafetich.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — As part of a three-phase facility upgrade of the church’s audio system, First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, Ill., recently completed the installation of a new wireless microphone system. Placed into service to coincide with the church’s 150th anniversary, the new equipment was installed by Sound Vision, Inc. of Elgin, Ill., and is comprised of components from Lectrosonics.

NEW YORK — Engineer Chris Rabold has guided rock band Widespread Panic’s sonic path live on tour since 2001. A total of 60-plus inputs accommodate everything from the six-piece band’s gear (the percussionist uses 21 alone), triggers and audience mics for recording — plus an allotted six lines for guest artists, so there’s a lot to manage at all times. Given the opportunity, Rabold jumped at the chance to take an SD7 out for a spin on Panic’s U.S. fall dates.

CROATIA — The Tuborg Green Festival in Zagreb, Croatia, brought together acts including Kaiser Chiefs, Edo Maajka, Kiril and Lollobrigida, who performed with Croatian rental company Lite Prom’s Turbosound loudspeaker system.

PARIS — Pope Benedict XVI recently made his first visit as pontiff to Paris, praying together with more than a quarter million followers on the massive lawns of the Esplanade des Invalides. Sound Designer Fred Goguet created an audio system for the momentous event using Meyer Sound components provided by a coterie of French audio firms, including Dispatch, Ateliers Lumiere, Projectis and Audio-Technique.

ROME — The Parco della Musica in Rome has now installed an L-ACOUTICS ARCS constant curvature line source system into its 2,800-capacity Sala Santa Cecilia. Italian sound designer Andrea Taglia specified and designed the system.

Audio-Technica has announced three new shotgun microphones: the BP4071, BP4071L and BP4073 Line + Gradient Condenser models. These highly directional mics offer low self-noise and improved resistance to Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). Their direct-coupled, balanced output is designed to provide a clean signal even in high-output conditions. All three mics require 48V DC phantom power, and feature a switchable 150 Hz high-pass filter and rugged housing made of lightweight structural-grade aluminum alloy.
