Product Hits of InfoComm 2015
From June 13-19, more than 39,000 professional audiovisual buyers and sellers from more than 108 countries descended on Orlando’s massive Orange county convention center for InfoComm 2015. This represents a 5.6 percent increase in attendance over last year’s show. This year’s expo also drew 950 exhibitors in demo rooms and exhibits, occupying a record 515,000 net square feet of exhibit and special events space.

I just flew in from the InfoComm 2015 — and boy, are my arms tired. You can read all the highlights and hot product picks starting on page 22. But I’m not much of a fan of the show. Actually, I really like InfoComm and I even like Orlando, but the combination of both in mid-June is a recipe for disaster. The weather is bad. Sure, Las Vegas (where the show alternates) is also hot, but at least it’s not humid, and when the humidity rises, it rains.

There are a lot of great things about running a magazine publishing company. For one thing, it gives you a medium to engage in discussions with others when you have an important topic on your mind that you feel is beneficial to share with others. Through the years, when I have penned a publisher’s note, it has always been about something in our industry. However, this time I am going off-script. I want to chat with you about an organization I have become aware of that is doing very good work for sick children around the country that you might want to know about.

There aren’t more than a handful or so of bands that can pull off a stadium tour, and when you take 1960’s supergroups such as The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and The Grateful Dead from the roster, the list gets even smaller. Yet with his current tour, The Big Revival, Kenny Chesney takes on a grueling 57-stop outing with 18 of those being stadium dates, including such vaulted venues as Soldier Field, the Rose Bowl, Lambeau Field and the San Francisco Bay Area’s new Levi’s Stadium (among others). The tour kicked off March 25 and 26 with two sold-out nights at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena and concludes on August 28 and 29 with two shows at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA.

Returning after InfoComm 2015, David Croxton of KV2 is still enjoying the success of the company’s reveal of the new VHD5.0 Constant Power Point Source Array. He says there was considerable interest in the whole new approach to large venue sound.

It seems that Bay Area-based Spider Ranch Productions is spinning a wider web. The ambitious, fast-growing company recently invested in a new Outline GTO sound system. But that’s not the most surprising news to come out of the regional sound company.

Previously in FRONT of HOUSE, we discussed some of the complications behind getting product certified — such as UL — for safety or electromagnetic emissions. That topic quickly devolves into alphabet soup, and can become rather expensive headache for companies designing product. It also drives tradeoffs beyond those involving the raw performance of a product.

You’ve heard it before. Under the right (or wrong) circumstances, some types of cellular phones are capable of interacting with audio equipment and causing audible interference. Since the first GSM-type mobile networks went up, the alien clicks and buzzes (sometimes known as “Blackberry buzz”) have terrorized audio professionals everywhere. I’m sure you know the characteristic blip-blip-blip bzzzzzzz all too well.
