When the first packaged kits containing a complement of microphones for miking a drum kit first appeared, they were really seen as either a way for mic makers to make a few extra bucks by selling several mics at once or a way for the inexperienced to get a package of mics that would all work together properly.
But just like everything else in pro audio, that has changed. Yep, there are still sub-$500 kits made more for budding drummers than for pro sound guys, but at the other end of the spectrum are systems that are extremely “focused” and will set you back five figures. In between is everything from semi-pro, under-a-grand offerings to really good kits with all of the mounting extras in the grand and a half range.
Yeah, we all have our favorites, and in a perfect world we would always choose each mic for each drum based on our own criteria for a specific gig. But sometimes it is a lot nicer to be able to pick up one case and know that you will have what you need to make the show work.
