The Doldrums

The doldrums are upon us and the wind has gone out of the sails of our good ship audio as we drift listlessly in a sea of calm. We have powered ourselves at a breakneck pace out of the old year and into the new and, as always, our charted course delivers us directly into a dead calm where we will drift for approximately two months or so while our live sound industry moves forward at a languid pace. Although the newer seafarers might be surprised by the seasonal torpor, the more experienced salty dogs among us know the drill and prepare accordingly. Arrgh matey, that just isn’t true and you know it!

At the 2014 I.S.E. show, Christie Digital unveiled Vive Audio, a full line of installation speakers for auditorium/theater applications. The Christie Vive Audio line array speakers combine advanced ribbon driver technology with a unique coaxial articulated line array design to provide greatly enhanced clarity, dramatically reduced distortion and ultra-fast transient response. All the standard line array models feature multiple 3.5-inch ribbon neodymium HF drivers and Kevlar cone midranges, arranged in a coaxial array with 120×30-degree (HxV) dispersion.

LEEDS and GLASGOW, U.K. — Andrea Bocelli drew crowds to Leeds’ First District Arena and Glasgow’s SSE Hydro in Nov. 2013, with FOH engineer Andrea Taglia handling the mix. Taglia specified Outline’s GTO system for both shows. The main system included 45 GTO enclosures hung in an L-C-R configuration, augmented at the low end with 24 Outline SubTech subwoofers.
