Guitar Center Purchases West LA Music

LOS ANGELES — Music instrument retailer Guitar Center purchased West LA Music, a music retail outlet that had been a source for gear for professional customers as well as consumers for 46 years. West LA Music’s last day of business was Saturday, Aug. 4, according to published reports. (The company’s website was still up after that date, and a phone line active, but callers were instructed to leave a recorded message.) Along with retail sales to professional users, the company had been active working with members of the Grammys Producers & Engineers Wing to stage the annual West LA Music Recording Expo.

LOS ANGELES — For Kaskade’s sold-out show at the Staples Center July 27 — the first time a DJ managed to do that — Rat Sound Systems provided a full L-Acoustics K1 stadium system. The show was part of the DJ’s Freaks of Nature tour. Rat Sound brought out its big guns, with left and right arrays each comprised of 16 K1 enclosures tailed with three dV-DOSC cabinets for downfill.

LOS ANGELES — Studio Equipment Rentals (SIR-USA) announced that its Las Vegas operation has moved to a bigger space. The new address there is 4545 Cameron Street Building A, Las Vegas, NV 89103. The company also noted that its Phoenix and Los Angeles locations have undergone renovations recently to better serve customers.

Tony-Awarded Broadway Shows Using DiGiCo

NEW YORK — Several ongoing Broadway productions, including the two honored with Tony Awards for sound design this year, are using DiGiCo consoles as part of the sound system setup. The Tony-awarded show designers are Clive Goodwin for Once (mixed on a DiGiCo SD7T)and Darron L. West, for Peter and the Starcatcher (DiGiCo SD10-24). Other productions using a DiGiCo SD7 include The Lion King , The Book of Mormon, Evita, Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar, Newsies, Sister Act and War Horse. Others using an SD10 include One Man, Two Guvnors.
