“It’s Only A Play” Gets Masque Sound Support

NEW YORK — Masque Sound provided a custom audio equipment package for the Tony Award-winning comedy It’s Only A Play. To create a transparent audio system, a section of DPA microphones were hidden within the framework of the set and at the lip of the stage to pick up the actors’ dialogues. The company used speakers from d&b audiotechnik, including E12 two-way multipurpose loudspeakers for the main left and right and downfill, as well as C7-TOP two-way horn loaded loudspeakers for the center cluster.

Solid State Logic Live L300 Console

Solid State Logic has unveiled the SSL Live L300 console and a new V2.5 software release adding significant developments to the SSL Live console platform. With the new release, there are now two models in SSL’s Live console range, the larger L500 and the new more compact L300. The L300 is a physically smaller, lower-cost version than the L500, but the L300 delivers the power and connectivity to handle large scale productions with up to 568 input/outputs, 128 processing paths (96 full, 32 dry), a 32 x 36 matrix, 36 VCA’s and 48 FX slots. Paul McCartney Engineer Using Avid for Live Mix, Recording

ATLANTA – FOH engineer Paul “Pab” Boothroyd has been using Avid’s VENUE and Pro Tools for the live mix and to record Paul McCartney as the former Beatle continues on his 59-show “Out There” solo tour. Boothroyd, who makes use of Avid Artist Suite, powered by the Avid MediaCentral Platform, credited the digital system for simplifying his setup and streamlining his workflow.

Q-Sys Network Audio Platform Supports Knott’s Scary Farm Event

BUENA PARK, CA – For this year’s Knott’s Scary Farm, the theme park is using dual redundant Q-Sys Core 500i processors to manage sound effect prompts and audio distribution needs in five of the park’s themed walk-through mazes. Currently, five of the eight mazes are networked giving the’ crew the ability to interface with other show systems.  Custom Lua scripts enable the Q-Sys cores to serve in both network, distributed audio and show control functions with UDP commands sent and received from lighting, video and animatronic controllers.  Additionally, GPIO on Q-Sys and other the systems provide further interface capabilities for nearly unlimited control options.

Riedel Provides Radio and Intercom Services for European Athletics Championships

ZURICH, Switzerland — Riedel Communications supplied radio and intercom services for the European Athletics Championships. Riedel’s MediorNet network carried video to the LED walls in Letzigrund Stadium, the road race in the city and to two warm-up stadiums. Four Artist digital matrix intercom systems enabled communications across the stadium and on the road race course while the Riedel Juggler enabled the connection of TETRA radio systems to support nearly 500 volunteers. The company also managed frequency coordination for radios, microphones, in-ear systems, and wireless camera systems — a total of more than 300 devices — used in the stadium and on road races.

The Black Keys Have a Solid Relationship with Sennheiser

After a decade in small clubs on the Midwest indie circuit, The Black Keys are now playing arena shows. As their success has grown, so have their audio needs. For their current Turn Blue worldwide tour, the band packed a full range of Sennheiser microphones. “I’ve used the Sennheiser line exclusively for years,” said production manager Anthony Pitcher. “It wasn’t a tough sell with my audio team – they’re brilliant engineers who already had a thorough knowledge of the product line. It was just up to me to bring it to the table for this band.”

Void Acoustics Supports Red Bull Culture Clash in London

LONDON – British loudspeaker manufacturer Void Acoustics will be supporting the Red Bull Culture Clash in London by collaborating with London grime crew Boy Better Know. Red Bull describes the event as “a live music experience which has taken place in the UK three times before. The show includes four stages, each featuring a different crew representing different genres. These crews battle for the title of Red Bull Culture Clash winner.” The Oct. 30 finale follows similar events held in Leeds, Birmingham and Bristol, U.K. earlier in October.

Yamaha QL5 and Dante Networking Used for Tattoo Reality TV Show

BUENA PARK, Calif.— To keep up with the fast pace of shooting a reality TV show, the audio team for Ink Master turned to the Yamaha QL5 Digital Audio Console paired with Dante Networking. “The control room essentially never gets powered down, and shooting takes place around the clock,” said Peter Schneider co-owner of Gotham Sound and Communications. “Marty’s (Kelly) main concern was that the system be absolutely rock solid. We both felt that the Yamaha QL5 and Dante networking could provide that inherent reliability.” Note: Martin Kelly, pictured here, left, passed away shortly after the new season began.
