HOUSTON – Audio industry pioneer Don Hartwig, 69, died from heart failure Sept. 22. The Bay Area native worked on sonar for the U.S. Navy while doing postgraduate work at Stanford University. He mixed sound and provided gear to numerous bands, including Santana at Woodstock and also the Jackson 5, Sonny and Cher and Elvis Presley, among many others. Hartwig's legacy includes his formative influence as an inventor and manufacturer. He is credited with some of the earliest monitor consoles, the first flown speakers and for the early role he played at companies including Soundcraft in the U.K. and Heil Sound and Showco in the U.S.
