WorxAudio for Winthrop University’s “Anything Goes”

ROCK HILL, SC — Every two years, Winthrop University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts teams up with the School of Music to produce a musical theatre presentation. This year’s combined effort was the classic Anything Goes, but Biff Edge, Winthrop University’s technical director, was a bit more discriminating when it came to choosing the right upgrade to the sound system.

The production, staged at the university’s Johnson Theater, ended up with a sound reinforcement system using the new TrueLine X2-P line array from WorxAudio Technologies, supplied by Paragon Productions.

Paragon Productions made a series of measurements and other tests for the loudspeaker setup, according to Al Smith, Paragon’s president. The Johnson Theater is a 331-seat conventional theatre with raked floor, orchestra pit and balcony.

Smith and Hugh Sarvis, WorxAudio Technologies’ CEO and director of engineering found that a single WorxAudio TrueLine X2-P would cover the raked seating area, suspended at the proscenium arch height of approximately 20 feet.

“The X2-P has a broad 160-degree horizontal dispersion pattern and can easily throw 75-85 feet at an 18-foot elevation,” said Smith. “The additional height that we flew the enclosure at gave us exactly what we were looking for — broad, even coverage throughout the room.”

The WorxAudio Technologies X2-P is a self-powered, two-way line array loudspeaker system that incorporates two modules — each with a medium format, 1-inch exit compression driver. These compression drivers are paired with dual 8-inch cone transducers that provide a frequency range that spans from 45 Hz to 20 kHz (-10 dB).

The upgraded system also includes Meyer Sound Laboratories MM-4 miniature wide-range loudspeakers used for front fill and a Meyer UPA-1 for balcony fill. “This show involved more than a dozen RF mics, chorus miking, area miking for dialog, and miking of a full pit orchestra,” said Smith. “This was a very involved setup and we worked closely with the staff of both the School of Music and the School of Visual and Performing Arts to ensure its success. We were awarded the bid based on our audio design, which used the WorxAudio Technologies X2-P as the centerpiece.”
