University of Mount Union Upgrades Its Football Stadium with One Systems Direct Weather Speakers
NASHVILLE, TN, December 19, 2011 – The University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio, a perennial NCAA Division III football powerhouse, recently decided to upgrade its stadium’s sound system. The university selected products from One Systems, a leading manufacturer of high intelligibility direct weather loudspeakers. One Systems contractor, Paladin Professional Sound of Cleveland, Ohio, performed the design and installation of the system.
When Paladin was awarded the contract, they selected One Systems speakers based on their experience from prior installations. One Systems’ all weather speakers, featuring patented Equivalent Throat horn/driver technology and high-output Inside/Only woofers, made the choice easy for Jay Dunkle, Sales Engineer at Paladin.
Mount Union’s main goals in upgrading their stadium sound system were to achieve more intelligible sound and better coverage for fans in the stands, as well as around the field’s fence line area. “The speakers we chose needed to provide a throw distance of over 400 feet because our customer wanted the sound to originate from one place – the scoreboard,” explains Dunkle. “We were looking for even coverage across the entire bleacher system as well as the fence line area at the far end of the field.”
Two One Systems CrossField Arrays were installed on either side of the scoreboard and a 112IM speaker was installed beneath the awning of the home bleachers, in order to provide for home side fence coverage. This provided the stadium with even coverage across the bleachers, with more than adequate SPLs.
Custom-made mounting for the scoreboard speaker hang was designed, fabricated and installed by Minerva Welding of Minerva, Ohio. These custom fabrications were built to integrate with the One Systems CrossField Array U-Bracket. (CFA-U) This marriage of custom hardware and stock One Systems suspension parts provided a perfect installation for the complex scoreboard install. The 112IM was installed using a One System’s 112IM-U-Bracket for suspension support.
In addition to Purple Raider football, full-scale half-time show productions and various musical events occur in this venue throughout the year. The stadium is an example of an all-weather, multi-purpose venue that needs highly intelligible speaker systems that will perform well for music and speech applications. Multi-use environments are perfect for One Systems capabilities. “We have been very impressed by One Systems performance and power handling. We knew their direct weather speakers would be ideal for this venue, and the speakers have met all our needs on this project,” says Dunkle.
