MIAMI — The Ultra Music Festival drew 70,000 to Miami’s Bicentennial Park to hear electronic music from Moby, Paul van Dyk, Cut Copy, Tiesto, David Guetta, Black Eyed Peas and Rabbit in the Moon, among others, and the main stage went deep with BASSMAXX’s new SP218 subwoofer, a.k.a. the “Dub-ill 18.”
BASSMAXX, which made an impact at UMF 2008 with an array of 16 BASSMAXX X3C “Trip” boxes, provided 16 of the new SP218s as a center sub array accompanied by 12 d&b audiotechnik B2 boxes per side along with two 8 J18 and 8 J12 line arrays and 8 J-SUBs per side.
Measured independently at 100 feet from the stage, BASSMAXX said the SP218 boxes provided flat frequency response to 30Hz with -6dB measured at 26Hz.
The SP218s were arrayed six wide with the four center stacks three boxes high and the two outermost stacks being two boxes high. They were powered by four Powersoft K10 amplifiers running 2 boxes per channel.
The crew ran the subs below their program power capacity — at approximately 3000 watts each. They are rated at 6000 watts per pair. All four amps were powered at 110V on a single 50 amp circuit.
The Ultra Music Festival, a bass-intensive show for 11 years, has relied on BASSMAXX for the last six years. Along with the main stage, BASSMAXX suppored several other stages with other subwoofer and line array gear, including the company’s X2C “Deuce” and XS2109 and XS2120 line array systems.
