TWISP, WA — Tom Pfaeffle, 49, a sound engineer who had done studio and live audio work for bands including Nirvana, The Black Crowes and Heart, was shot through a motel door July 17. He died about two hours later, according to local news reports. A 57-year-old gunman has been apprehended and is being held on charges that include murder, reckless endangerment and second-degree assault.

Police are still investigating a motive, but it appears that Pfaeffle, who was on vacation with his wife, may have been inadvertently trying to enter the gunman’s room when the shooting occurred.

Pfaeffle was owner of The Tank, a recording studio based in Black Diamond, Wash. He also taught audio production at the Art Institute of Seattle.
