EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – SK Systems' Tom Heinisch used a new DiGiCo SD9 for the Richard Nader Memorial Doo Wop Concert XXI at the Izod Center Arena.
"We were confident the SD9 could handle this task," said Heinisch, noting that SK Systems had used DiGiCo's D-series and SD-series surfaces for similar events in the past.
This year's in-the-round concert featured 10 artists performing throughout the night, with a finale featuring all artists on stage.
"We used all 40 flexi channels, 28 mono, 12 stereo derived from the ‘pit' back-up band, RF and hard-wired mics, as well as the Video and CD playback inputs," Heinisch said.
"The in-the-round, 360-degree coverage of the arena made use of the matrix section to feed the different speaker zones and house hearing impaired and lobby systems," he added. "The snapshot with recall scoping was key to this multi-act show with afternoon rehearsals then recall during the performances.
"The ability to assign the faders to be any input, group, aux, matrix, or control group allowed for creation of custom fader banks leading to comfort when mixing the show without having to ‘page' through to get to something," Heinisch continued. "Building a few macros into the equation, gave us all the surface control abilities to allow the sound engineer to create an excellent sounding show with ease."
"The only down point to the experience," Heinisch joked, was that "because of the SD9's small footprint, audience members think you're the lighting guy!"
