St. Louis Tent Structure Collapses in High Winds, More than a Dozen Injured, One Dies

ST. LOUIS, MO — Within seconds, high winds knocked down a large tent set up at Kilroy’s Sports Bar for a celebration after the Cardinals-Brewers baseball game at about 4 pm on Saturday, April 28. Of the 200 people gathered, nearly half sustained at least minor injuries. Of more than a dozen transported to local hospitals for treatment, five were listed in critical, and then serious, condition. An Illinois man, Alfred Goodman, died.

News reports noted that Goodman had been celebrating the Cardinal’s victory with his brother and may have suffered a heart attack after both of them were knocked to the ground when the tent structure fell. No official cause of death had been released by presstime.

The winds tore at the temporary structure, lifting the fabric and aluminum pole structure. City officials said the structure had been inspected and approved for use. Investigators will be checking to see if any modifications had been made since it was inspected in mid-April.

The storm was estimated to have generated winds in the 50 to 70 mph range. It was followed by more severe weather later in the evening, including wide reports of hail damage.
