NEW YORK — This year’s Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center in New York City was televised nationally on NBC and featured performances by Rod Stewart, Cee Lo Green, Mariah Carey, Trace Adkins and Tony Bennett. As in years past, Production Resource Group (PRG) supplied a total of 24 Harman’s JBL VerTec VT4887ADP powered compact line array elements, installed on lifts to cover 49th and 50th Streets on the east and west sides of Rockefeller Center.

The 80-foot-tall spruce, which survived the gale force winds of Sandy while still firmly rooted in Mount Olive, NJ, was erected and lit one month later, adorned by more than 30,000 lights and crowned by a Swarovski crystal star. NYC Mayor Bloomberg threw the ceremonial switch at 9pm Nov. 28.

It was the 80th annual tree-lighting ceremony. The first tree lighting took place in 1931, and except for the following year, it has continued ever since. The tree will stay illuminated until Jan. 7, and its wood will provide lumber for Habitat for Humanity.
