FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL — Orville Peck is considered by many to be music’s newest outlaw although, with Peck, genres can get blurred. He is among a small group of artists who have performed at both the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and its country cousin, Stagecoach. His stage persona — gold lamé Nudie suits and matching hat — are a throwback to the golden age of country music. His background, as much as is known, might suggest more modern, even punk, influences. And then there’s the fringed mask. Completing the stage ensemble is a Heil Sound PR37 microphone with a custom gold finish.
Peck spent much of 2022 on his “Bronco Tour” with band members Kristopher Bowering (drums), Kyle Connolly (bass), Duncan Jennings (guitar) and singer Bria Salmena (keys, guitar, BGV). The year wrapped up at the Greek Theater where he hosted “Orville Peck’s 4th Annual Rodeo” featuring multiple artists performing in the classic Los Angeles venue.
The tour relied heavily on local venue production but carried an IEM system manned by monitor mixer Nate Peterson — Midas M32 console, JH Audio monitors, and sub-snake and splitter with a full complement of Heil Sound mics for the band. Roberto Pagano is Orville Peck’s FOH mixer and found the Heil PR31BW to his liking for a multitude of instruments on stage including most of the drum kit, guitar cabinets and congas. For vocals he is using all Heil PR37s.
Pagano said, “When I first began working with Orville I tried the PR35 and that worked very well. I was intrigued when the PR37 came out and was very impressed with that and made the switch this year. Orville knows what it’s supposed to sound like in his ears and when it is working. That mic is perfect for his voice. The PR 37 works really well on Bria’s vocals too. She sings a few duets with Orville, which are big moments in the show. We have been on a real growth spurt the last two years or so and it helps to have a consistent situation with the microphones. The people at Heil Sound are always great to work with and I’m looking forward to a big year in 2023.”
