Minneapolis Theater Gets Total Control

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis recently upgraded with a myMix monitor mixing system consisting of 17 myMix mix stations, three IEX 16L-A input expanders and a myMix Control/networking interface. The facility’s master audio engineer Ross Anderson talked about how myMix helps the staff produce consistent, quality live theater.

“MyMix changed the way we work. Being able to monitor audio anywhere in the theater and create mixes for people has decentralized the idea of having a lot of expensive equipment in one place. We can do combined audio, so one myMix device allows a technician to listen to all of the RF microphones in what we call a ‘confidence monitoring’ mode.”We also can pull up each individual mix of the musicians in the orchestra pit, to assure our musicians are hearing what they need to hear. We don’t have to run around with label tape to make changes, we’re able to make immediate changes to what channels we’re going to use — it is displayed on all of their screens.”

There are other advantages, says Anderson. “The audio quality is vastly improved over some other products we’ve had over the years.  It’s also a lot smaller and compact. We don’t have nearly the kind of cabling going on. The total install time and cabling runs that occur somewhere like a tight fitting orchestra pit is greatly reduced.”

Another plus is MyMix Control, which gives the engineer network access to each performer’s mix. “Not all musicians are interested in dealing with technological mixes; they just want to put on their headphones and hear what they need to hear,” Anderson explains. “Others really want to turn the knobs and make the changes they want to make. MyMix Control gave us the ability to answer both of those needs without having to compromise. It also lets us back up and store mixes, once we have established the show.”
