McKINNEY, TX – The McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC), originally built in 1876 in the town's historic courthouse, has been equipped with a Tannoy VRAS in its 427-seat theatre. PMK Consultants designed the system and the Whitlock Group handled its installation.
"It's very intimate," said David Taylor, director at MPAC. "The theater is on the second floor, the balcony on the third. It's very art deco in its style, but with very clean lines. It's very beautiful."
A variety of Tannoy in-wall and in-ceiling loudspeakers were used for surround in the VRAS system. "We have so many different types of performances," said George Powell, MPAC maintenance specialist. He noted the range in the room's audio configurations, from stereo to 5.1 surround.
David Stearns, PMK's design/consultant for the project, was familiar with the Tannoy loudspeakers and chose them for their accuracy and low profile. "There's no phase offset, because the horn's above or below the woofer," Stearns noted. "Everything's right together there and you get kind of a mixing room's accuracy," he added, also noting the product's competitive price.
The system includes 32 Tannoy iW6 TDCs in the walls on both the main theater level and balcony and 22 CMS601 DCs for over- and under-balcony coverage. Six Tannoy CM 12s are placed in two rows of three in the ceiling over the central audience area. "That gives us a little bit more low-end, while the 12s provide far more low-frequency extension than the in-walls," Stearns noted.
Other components in the system include a Yamaha DM2000 at FOH, QSC CX amplifiers and QSC BASIS DSP. A house center hang consists of EAW AX Series loudspeakers.
