WALTHAM, MA — Longtime pro audio veteran and Berklee College of Music alum Robert J. Carey, the marketing events manager at Eastern Acoustic Works, died June 23, 2016. Carey (shown here at the EAW booth during the recent 2016 InfoComm show in Las Vegas) died unexpectedly due to complications following routine knee surgery. He was 44.
Carey was a 1990 alumnus of Minuteman Career and Technical High School in Lexington, MA and was accepted by the Berklee College of Music and graduated from there in 1994. After completing his studies at Berklee, he entered the pro audio field, beginning with signal processing leader Lexicon, where he served as its trade show manager for five years.
Remaining in the Boston area, he then worked at Eastern Acoustic Works in nearby Whitinsville, MA in 1999. In 2001 he left to do sales and independent consulting, and later Carey returned to the EAW family in 2013 as marketing events manager, where he interfaced closely with both media and industry customers, where he was renowned for his friendly nature, good humor and in-depth knowledge of both the entire EAW product line as well as the needs and requirements of established and potential clients.
“Rob Carey was possibly the kindest, most giving and helpful person I have had the pleasure of knowing,” said Eastern Acoustic Works co-founder Ken Berger (now with VUE Audiotechnik), whose words seemed to echo those of everyone who knew Carey. “His generosity was unlimited. In every situation — both personal and professional — he was only a phone call away and always ready to help. He was a constant source of kindness and friendship, like a gentle calm in the midst of a great storm. Losing him is like a great disturbance in the universe.”
A memorial service took place at the Nardone Funeral Home on June 28, followed by a funeral mass in St. Jude’s Church in Waltham, MA.
Carey is survived by his wife Jenn (Deptula) Carey and their three small children — Johnny, Charlie and Lilli. In lieu of flowers, please make donations directly to Carey Memorial Family Fund care of Watertown Savings Bank, Attn: Bill Burgess, 10 Bigelow Ave, Watertown, MA 02472.
Alternatively, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help his children, at https://www.gofundme.com/2aysx8ac. Gifts to either are greatly appreciated.
