OXFORD, CT — Noted acoustical consultant/designer Tom Young, the owner and principal consultant at Connecticut-based Electroacoustic Design Services (EDS), passed away on October 12 of an apparent heart attack. He was 62. His company, EDS specialized in sound reinforcement system design, loudspeaker system measurement and optimization, acoustic design and noise reduction. (Note: He was NOT related to Tom Young, the noted FOH mixer for Tony Bennett.)
Young began his career as a bass player for a variety of bands (his passion for bass proved a lifelong obsession and creative outlet) and gave up the onstage role for that of a front of house mixer, which he later parlayed into being a audio designer/consultant with a seven-year stint at Artec Consultants Inc., followed by working at Engineering Harmonics and Jaffe Holden Acoustics, where he was a senior consultant in electro-acoustics. Young also spent as year with Meyer Sound, as a sales engineer, as a liaison to consultants in US and Europe, as well as assisting with product design and test/measurement activities.
In addition to measuring and optimizing numerous loudspeaker systems for public and house of worship facilities, his many past projects included serving as project manager and lead engineer for the renovation of the FOH loudspeaker system at Wamu Theater at Madison Square Garden, backbone wiring and equipment for black box theater, music technology studio, orchestra rehearsal room, dance studio and recording control room at The Juilliard School in New York City.
Young was well-liked throughout the pro audio community and was generous with his time, offering to share his expertise and vast experience on AES panels, SynAudCon events and various web and print magazine forums.
Tom Young is survived by his siblings Jim, Mary and Ty. No funeral arrangements were announced at press time.
