High Winds Force Cancellation of Some Electric Daisy Carnival Performances

LAS VEGAS — Day Two of the three-day Electric Daisy Carnival, held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway from dusk to dawn June 8-10, was hampered by winds estimated at 30 mph, with gusts strong enough to kick stinging sand into the air. The high winds had been building since about 8 pm June 9. After meeting with local safety officials, the festival organizer, Insomniac Events, announced a temporary shutdown to the event’s seven stages at about 1 am June 10.

Insomniac, which also shut down entry to the festival grounds, also relocated the 90,000 people already at the event to the speedway grandstands for about an hour before allowing them to return to the festival grounds.

By 2:45 am, it became apparent that the strong winds would be continuing to at least 5 am, and Insomniac officially cancelled all further events. Insomniac also announced that Day Two tickets would be honored on Day Three.

“Insomniac’s main concern is and always has been the safety of our guests, and we take into careful consideration anything that might jeopardize their experience or safety,” Insomniac noted, in a message on its website.

Apart from some revelers overturning garbage cans and using them as makeshift drums, there were no reports of unruly crowd behavior or injuries related to the cancellation.

The crowds stayed in hopes that the stages would reopen, but by 3 am, Insomniac announced that they would remain closed for the night. The festival organizer also announced that tickets for Day Two would be honored on Day Three.
