Ferrell Plays Bush on Broadway with Meyer Sound M’elodie

NEW YORK — Will Ferrell recently staged a critically praised one-man show, You’re Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush, at the Cort Theatre on Broadway, using a Meyer Sound M’elodie line array loudspeaker system. The show, directed by Adam McKay, ended its well-received limited run in March.

The show’s audio system was used to combine Ferrell’s impressions of the former commander-in-chief with sound effects and music. The goal was for Ferrell to sound very natural, while achieving seamless integration with music and effects cues, according to Peter Fitzgerald, sound designer with New York-based Sound Associates,

“There’s a lot of sound going on, but it all blends nicely,” Fitzgerald said. “The system sounds great, and these guys did a fantastic job.”

With assistance from Megan Henninger, Fitzgerald designed a left-center-right system for the 1,200-seat Cort Theatre using a center cluster of 10 Meyer Sound M’elodie line array loudspeakers flanked by side hangs of three CQ-1 loudspeakers each.

In addition, 12 M1D line array loudspeakers provided under-balcony coverage, along with a pair of UPA-1P loudspeakers for left and right sidefills. Two 700-HP subwoofers provided low frequencies. Domonic Sack tuned the system using the Meyer Sound SIM 3 audio analyzer.

Ferrell and McKay contributed valuable input during the final phases of system design. “Will is very funny, and very easy to work with, and he’s very plugged in to the production,” said Fitzgerald. “And Adam, who has directed a number of Will’s films, is also great. They both know what they want to hear, and that makes our work much easier.”
