NASHVILLE, TN — The Exit/In, a Music City landmark for 30 years, recently upgraded its with a Variant Series setup from D.A.S. Audio consisting of V25A line array elements, Variant 18A subwoofers, and SML-12A floor monitors. A Production Company, LLC supplied the gear. “The Exit/In plays host to a wide range of musical performers—everything from Bluegrass to Heavy Metal,” noted Howard Bennett, A Production Company’s owner and chief engineer. “For this reason, it was critical that the new sound reinforcement system have the ability to handle any music style competently.

“As the room can accommodate upwards of roughly 500 people, solid vertical throw and wide horizontal dispersion were critical considerations for the new system. Of equal importance, the club’s owner wanted a sound system to fit the room’s limited space and that blended seamlessly into its visual aesthetic. Ultimately, we determined that the D.A.S. Audio Variant Series installation line array system was the best fit.”

Bennett used eight D.A.S. Audio Variant 25A line array elements flown four per side in a left-right configuration over the stage at a height of 14 feet. Featuring dual 5-inch cone transducers mated to a neodymium compression driver with a 2-inch titanium diaphragm, the Variant 25A is a self-powered, bi-amplified, compact array module designed for use as a multi-box array in small to mid-sized installations. It is also well-suited as a fill unit for front and under-balcony fills, or combined with other D.A.S. line array systems.

Low frequency support for the Exit/In’s new system comes from four D.A.S. Audio Variant 18A subwoofers—residing in pairs on both sides of the stage in the recessed areas where the stage front protrudes into the room. With a single 18-inch cone transducer driven by a Class D power amplifier rated at 1,250 watts continuous, the Variant 18A is a fitting complement to the Variant 25A, extending the bandwidth of the array to 30 Hz.

The performers can position the eight D.A.S. Audio SML-12A floor monitors used for stage monitoring as needed. The SML-12A is a self-powered, 2-way stage monitor that incorporates a 12-inch cone transducer with a 3-inch voice coil that is mated to a Neodymium compression driver with a 1.5-inch exit. With a bi-amplified power source using 500 watts of Class D amplification for the lows and a 100 watt Class AB system for the highs, the D.A.S. Audio SML-12A uses a low-profile design.

The new system was deployed in late April 2009 and was immediately placed into service. Reflecting on the project, Bennett credited the D.A.S. Audio system and the company’s customer/technical support services. “My client couldn’t be happier, the audio quality in the room is unbelievable, and he has a larger stage space for the bands to perform.”
