INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The "less is more" credo might seem out of place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where a surplus of speed, horsepower and daring have always ruled the day. But the compact size of QSC's ISIS loudspeakers ended up being a key selling point, according to Dave Dusick, the venue's technical coordinator of multimedia systems.
"It may seem odd, but we didn't select the loudspeakers for this project based upon their sound," Dusick said. "Spectator and television sight lines were our first priority, and both demanded that we utilize loudspeaker elements which were as close to invisible as possible.
"Several manufacturers brought in devices which sounded very, very good," Dusick continued. "The problem was that they didn't have the right combination of performance and low-profile aesthetics to make the cut. QSC's ISIS boxes had a lock on that-they almost defy fundamental principles of physics in that they are extremely compact, yet produce amazing sound and frequency response."

In all there are 325 full-range ISIS 102W-DD loudspeakers mounted along the track's catch fence. For extended low frequency response, 40 ISIS 215SB-DD subwoofer systems were added as well, concealed from sight.
"We realized in the beginning that the boxes sitting on the fence would be one of the key elements of the entire system," Dusick noted. "They had to look the part and play the part. ISIS does both well, and provided us the distinct advantage of coming from the same partner that supplied us with the rest of our system components.
"We fully expect this system to be up and running for many years to come," Dusick added. "Having one company to stand behind every aspect of it just makes sense, especially when it's one with the long-term vision of QSC."
