Charges Filed in Radiohead Staging Collapse

TORONTO — The Ontario Ministry of Labor, which has been investigating what led to the structural collapse that killed drum tech Scott Johnson, 33, on June 16, 2012, filed eight charges against Live Nation Canada Inc. and Live Nation Ontario Concerts GP Inc., four charges against Optex Staging & Services Inc., and a single charge against Domenic Cugliari, an engineer based in Bolton, ON, according to reports.

The accident, in Downsview Park here, injured three other crew members, one requiring hospitalization. It also forced the cancellation of the sold-out concert hours before some 40,000 were expected to attend. The structure had been checked out by an engineer and approved for use prior to the collapse. The weather — sunny, with light breezes — was not a factor in the collapse.

The charges were filed June 7. Penalties range up to $500,000 per count for corporations, and individuals face up to $25,000 in fines or up to a year in prison, according to reports.  Formal hearings are expected to get underway by late June.
