MADRID – Singer/dancer Joana Sainz Garcia, 30, died early Sept. 2 after being hit by an exploding pyro device while on stage before an audience of about 1,000 spectators, according to reports.

Her group, Super Hollywood Orchestra, was performing on the last night of the four-day festival in Las Berlanas, northwest of Madrid. The performance was halted immediately after the accident occurred at about 2 a.m.

Sainz Garcia, reportedly struck in the abdomen, collapsed and lost consciousness on stage. Medical professionals assisted on stage and the performer was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

Super Hollywood Orchestra promoter Prones 1SL released a statement mourning her loss. “All our staff, musicians, assembly and artists in general express our most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends,” the statement noted, calling Sainz Garcia “exemplary,” both as an artist and a person. “It’s going to be for all of us very difficult to overcome her absence.”
