Olivier Awards Honors Matilda’s Simon Baker for Best Sound Design

LONDON — Among the London stage productions recognized with 2012 Olivier Awards was Matilda The Musical, staged at the Cambridge Theatre, which honored Simon Baker for best sound design. The awards ceremony was held April 15 at the Royal Opera House.

Along with Best Sound Design, Matilda won Best Set Design, Best New Musical, Best Director (Matthew Warchus), Best Theatre Choreographer (Peter Darling), Best Actor In A Musical (Bertie Carvel) and Best Actress In A Musical (presented to the four children who alternate in the show’s title role).

Baker had previously been nominated for an Olivier Award for top sound honors for his work on The Lord Of The Rings and Brief Encounter. He has worked on more than 70 productions in all.

2012 Olivier Award sound design nominees included Frankenstein designed by Underworld and Ed Clarke at the Olivier Theatre; Ghost The Musical, designed by Bobby Aitken at the Piccadilly Theatre; and The Ladykillers, designed by Ben and Max Ringham at the Gielgud Theatre.
