LONDON – Ed Furguson, sound manager for the London National Theatre, who also served as associate sound designer for the musical The Light Princess (pictured here), worked with Simon Baker to determine a piano microphone solution that would meet the needs of both the venue and the production. After extensive tests, they opted for Earthworks’ PM40 PianoMic.
Choosing the right mic was an important consideration for the production – the musical, written by singer-songwriter Tori Amos and playwright Samuel Adamson is centered around a grand piano. (As it turns out, Amos’ personal grand piano was the one used for the show.)
The Earthworks PM40 is designed to be quick and easy to use with a simple extendable pole. It rests inside the grand piano and has miniature omni capsules optimized for grand piano, promising to caption the perfect piano sound from the instrument. The product is available in full stick, half stick or even with the lid closed and without the use of unsightly microphone boom stands.
