Aladdin Opens on Broadway with Masque Sound Support

NEW YORK — The Broadway musical Aladdin, which opened at the Amsterdam Theatre March 20, features songs from the Academy Award-winning score, plus a few new songs written for the staged production. They’re heard via a d&b audiotechnik system provided by Masque Sound, to sound designer Ken Travis’ specifications. Masque Sound also supplied a Studer Vista 5 digital mixing console.

LAVAL, Quebec — Le Diplomate Audiovisual is hosting its first two-day Open Door (Porte Ouverte le Diplomate, or POD) event at Le Diplomate Audio Visual, 5588 Blvd Rossignols in Laval, Quebec (north of Montreal) on May 13-14. Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. (YCAS) is the main sponsor of the event. More than two dozen other exhibitors are expected to attend. The event, which is free but requires registration, will also feature guest presenters, product demonstrations and conference discussions.

NEW YORK — For the Skylark Lounge, which offers visitors views of the Hudson River, Empire State Building and Midtown Manhattan from 30 floors up, Advanced Audio Technology of New York (AATNY) provided a sound system that includes Martin Audio components along with a custom-made DJ booth. The Martin Audio gear includes 14 AQ28, eight 2 x15 sub-bass enclosures, BSS signal processing and Tactical Audio amplification.

New Zealand High School Sports Facility Features One Systems Gear

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Leonard Lucas of Atlantic Audio Limited headed up an audio project for a new sports facility at Westlake Girls High School here. Lucas turned to Robert Te’o of True Audio to design and install the system. The setup features a cluster of One Systems Direct Weather loudspeakers at the center of an all-weather canopy. The canopy covers more than 4,200 square yards of playing court surface for tennis and netball.

NASHVILLE — Accompanying Danish rock band Volbeat on a current U.S. tour are Trivium, an Orlando, FL-based heavy metal band, and Digital Summer, a rock band from Phoenix. Trivium’s monitor engineer, Mike Babcock (pictured left, with tour manager Joey Brueckmann, right) chose the new Yamaha QL5 Digital Audio Console for monitor mixing. Clair is providing most of the gear for the tour; the band owns JH-Audio IEMs and Sennheiser transmitters.

As Dick Hayes Prepares to Step Down, Entec Names Mark Ellis-Cope Head of Sound

WEST LONDON — Entec Sound & Light named Mark “Magic” Ellis-Cope as its head of sound. Ellis-Cope takes over as Dick Hayes steps back after fulfilling that role for Entec over a 19-year span. Entec announced that Hayes will be shifting away from “the fast lane” at the end of July, capping a career that began when Hayes was still a teen in the 1960s, supporting shows for a fast-rising rock band called The Who.
