In Memoriam: Rob Carey, 44

WALTHAM, MA — Longtime pro audio veteran and Berklee College of Music alum Robert J. Carey, the marketing events manager at Eastern Acoustic Works, died June 23, 2016. Carey (shown here at the EAW booth during the recent 2016 InfoComm show in Las Vegas) died unexpectedly due to complications following routine knee surgery. He was 44.

EDC Fatality Reported

LAS VEGAS — No fatalities had been reported immediately after this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival festival held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway June 17-19. But one attendee who collapsed from suspected heat stroke at about 6 a.m. after the event’s third night of revelry was hospitalized and did not recover. Kenani Kaimuloa, 20, from the San Diego area, was declared brain-dead and taken off life support.

Pearl Jam Tours with Rat Sounds’ L-Acoustics Rig

CAMARILLO, CA — Pearl Jam’s longtime tour provider, Rat Sound, has been supporting the band’s latest shows with a large-scale, 360-degree L-Acoustics K1/K2 rig for the band’s North American tour. “The K1/K2 system covered extremely well in-the-round to a sold-out tour,” said Rat Sound crew chief Tom Worley. “Having the continuation of a large format box on the main hangs and adjustable horizontal coverage with K2 allowed Greg [Nelson, FOH engineer] and Andrew [Gilchrest, FOH/systems tech] to achieve exceptional results.”

Masque Sound Provides ‘Stereo Feel’ for Hadestown

NEW YORK — Tony Award-winning Sound Designer Robert Kaplowitz chose a custom audio equipment package from Masque Sound for the New York Theatre Workshop’s hot new folk opera, Hadestown. One of Kaplowitz’s major goals in designing the sound – for the in-the-round production off Broadway – was to transfer the lushness, energy and clarity of the original album into a live setting without sacrificing storytelling. “As I was listening to the album, I realized that one way (record producer) Todd Sickafoose achieved a lot of that was through a remarkably nuanced use of stereo space, so I knew I wanted to create a really detailed surround system to provide that stereo feel.”
