BERLIN – The 136th Audio Engineering Society Convention, which took place April 26 – 29, attracted 1,259 attendees – over twice the attendance of Rome, the year before. The convention featured a mix of technical programs, manufacturer exhibitions, and Project Studio Expo presentations.

COPENHAGEN — DPA Microphones CEO Christian Poulsen noted that “due to contractual reasons,” none of its mics were used by performers at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, staged at B&W Halls, not far from DPA’s headquarters in Denmark. Even so, the company’s d:screet Supercardioid Miniature Podium Microphones were used within the press room used at the event, which wrapped up on May 10.

BERLIN – Delivering high-quality sound for many of today’s top performers, Sennheiser provided microphones for the the 23rd ECHO Awards Ceremony held in Berlin. Both traditional and wireless technology was used, and the number of wireless channels was particularly impressive: a total of around 200 frequencies were in use for the awards. For her performance, Kylie Minogue used a Sennheiser SKM 5200 handheld transmitter, while Shakira’s management had requested two SKM 5200s with Neumann KK 105 capsules. Wired Sennheiser microphones were used both by artists – such as the five e 935s used by Peter Maffay and his band – but also on the host’s podium, where two ME 36s on goosenecks ensured that speech was heard with perfect clarity.

Lucas turned to Robert Te’o of True Audio to design and install the system. The setup features a cluster of One Systems Direct Weather loudspeakers at the center of an all-weather canopy. The canopy covers more than 4,200 square yards of playing court surface for tennis and netball.

BEIJING — For CD Blues, a bar beneath the Ravioli Factory restaurant in Beijing’s Chaoyang district, Sennheiser China provided a K-array setup that includes KR402 on both sides of the stage, two flown KRM33 as front-fills, four KF12 as monitors speakers for the musicians and six Kobra KK50 on both sides of the back of the room for surround. Upstairs in the restaurant, there are eight compact Tornados around the room, supported by two Piccolo Subwoofers for the lower frequencies. The whole installation is managed by one Piccolo Amplifier. Sennheiser China distributes K-array gear in China.
