The Rant Zone

In 1958, the Cannon XLR made way for standardized connections for hardwired mics. Today the industry is primed for a single standard for miniature headworn/lavalier mic connectors.

Wireless Connectors: Where’s the Standard?

It sounds like the start of a joke, but the question “What connector do you use with a wireless mic?” is serious business indeed. There’s no connector between a handheld wireless mic and the receiver. However, as soon as you bring beltpack/bodypack transmitters in the equation, all bets are off. And while not obvious to the general audio community, people who regularly work with lavalier and headworn mics are well aware of the issue here.

A Response to “Tour Managing for Dummies”

I enjoy the insights and tips Steve La Cerra often imparts in his “Theory & Practice” columns, including his recent series “Tour Managing for Dummies” (FRONT of HOUSE, June 2013, page 57, and “Tour Managing for Smarties” (FOH, July 2013, page 33). Note: This was written in response to Baker Lee’s “FOH At Large” column (June 2012 FOH) regarding the occasional dangers of technology and whether depending on various devices represented a form of “cheating.” We thought Kip presented some good points and we wanted to share them with you. —ed.

As I sit typing this on my MacBook, I start to wonder if I am “cheating” by not picking up a pen and paper, purchasing a stamp and driving a letter to the post office. All things that, in this economy, I would prefer not to do.

Who’s the Headliner?

(One of my favorite funny/smart people is Dennis Miller, and I remember I used to watch his show no matter who was on just to hear “The Rant.” Well, Dennis is busy doing game shows and I haven’t heard a good rant in way too long. So, welcome to the FOH Rant Zone. Will this feature run all the time? Nope. But as often as we get really good rants, we’ll run ‘em as long as they won’t get us sued. To open this inaugural installment, we have one of my favorite hotheads. Take it away… —  ed.)
