If you haven’t figured it out by now, the sound industry is just getting past school graduations, which mark the official start of the busy summer season. As anybody who works at a local soundco can testify, handling two weeks of back-to-back college and high school graduations can make for some crazy times. In a busy scholastic market, like the San Francisco Bay Area where I live, there are at least a dozen or more colleges and a multitude of high schools that all seem to schedule their commencement exercises the same week. Trying to juggle coverage and setups of all that can equate to a logistical nightmare.

In Memoriam: Dennis Sheehan, 1946-2015

Dennis Sheehan, longtime tour manager for U2 and 2008 Parnelli Lifetime Achievement award winner, died May 27. He was 68. Sheehan had been in Los Angeles with U2 for a series of shows in the early stages of their 2015 “Innocence + Experience” Tour. U2 had opened the first of five shows at the Forum the night before.

Neil Diamond World Tour

“Neil has a way of getting the audience with him one way or another! He’s amazing at that.”

So declares sound designer/FOH engineer Stanley Miller, who would certainly know of such things. In what has to be some kind of record, Miller has embarked on yet another world tour for an astounding 47th year. Honored with a Parnelli Audio Innovator Award in 2009, and recently brought onto the Parnelli Board of Advisors, this is a guy with stamina. He’s the same age as Diamond (74), but as he has throughout his entire career, he continues to embrace and even push the cutting edge of new technology.

Stanley Miller: A Life of Sound

Neil Diamond’s sound engineer since 1967, FOH Engineer Stanley Miller has always been a technologically savvy innovator. “Stan wasn’t on the cutting edge, he was on the bleeding edge,” states Larry Italia, longtime audio veteran who was a VP and general manager at Yamaha Pro Audio for decades and often worked with Miller, of which he said: “He is fearless, has remarkable instincts, and possesses a wonderfully curious mind.”

It took 12 weeks, and more than 90 truckloads of construction materials, but what was a dusty, forlorn corner of the Las Vegas Strip was transformed into the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll playground by Brown United. The company’s largest undertaking to date, Rock in Rio USA took outdoor festivals to a new level, incorporating not just multiple stages, but an elaborate VIP area, “Rock Streets” filled with shops and eateries and even a Ferris wheel and zip line.
