Okay, I was wrong in last month’s “Editor’s Note” (FOH, Jan. 2017, page 4) where I believed a long-range 10-day forecast from The Weather Channel predicting a warm, dry Winter NAMM show. However, in 2017, we live in uncertain times, and after a seven-year drought, the usual sunny January skies of Southern California turned into a deluge from Jan. 19-22, 2017. The largest country music club in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Saddle Rack, was founded by Hank Guenther and opened on Aug 13, 1976 in San Jose, CA. The club prospered for some 25 years, but the astronomical rise of real estate prices in the Silicon Valley eventually swayed Guenther to close the club in 2001 and sell the 6.5-acre parcel of land where it stood.

A major breakthrough for the live industry came in 1987, with Neutrik’s debut of the speakON created specifically for speaker connections. A new EU European Low Voltage Directive required that any connector capable of carrying more than 50 volts must be protected against inadvertent contact. Obviously, other connectors — such as banana plugs and 1/4-inch styles — did not meet this requirement.
