Production Details
For this unique take on Charles Dickens’ classic tale, Tony winning actor Jefferson Mays took on more than 50 roles, surrounded with the magic of lighting, video and sound effects to turn the familiar holiday tale into a new and powerful theatrical experience. Sound designer Joshua Reid, who had worked on the streaming production of the play in 2020, brought in Meyer Sound speakers along with a lot of wireless mics from Masque Sound for the solo actor’s live stage performance.
“Jefferson wears four wireless microphones all around his head during the production,” says Reid. “That is a lot of microphones for one person, but he is out there for 90 minutes straight and doesn’t have a chance to change mics.” The mics are important because, for this show, along with QLab audio playback, Ableton processing is used “to change the pitch and the timbre and tone to match the many various character vocalizations that he is trying to create… Ableton is a platform that is traditionally used for musical instrument processing and so we have taken the human voice and treated it as a musical instrument.”
