FLORENCE, AL – Sutherland Sight and Sound equipped 15,000-capacity Braly Municipal Stadium, home of the University of North Alabama Lions, with 23 One Systems speakers. They were needed to remedy problems posed by the stadium's 27-year-old sound system, which had last been updated in 1994.
Some of the issues that plagued the old system were poor coverage and sound quality, inconsistent sound throughout the venue, and feedback heard by the fans as well as television audiences.
Sutherland Sight and Sound's Lane Sutherland was first drawn to One Systems' Equivalent Throat horn/driver technology and high-output Inside/Only woofers after listening to a demo presented by One Systems' chief engineer Mike O'Neill in 2009.
Sutherland was impressed with the speaker's intelligibility, "overall tonal quality" and the speakers' ability to be augmented with subs. Sutherland Sound senior systems engineer Greg Boren also credited the One Systems gear for weatherproofing and customer service, citing help from sales and marketing manager Mike Torlone as "fantastic."
Sutherland recounted the bid award in November that required the system to be complete for the 2010 Division II Championship Game on December 18, 2010. "The project began under strict time constraints," Sutherland said. "We were anxious to complete the job as well as to deliver a great sounding system within our budget, and One Systems did not disappoint."
The final installation included One Systems smaller speakers like the 112IM, as well as long throw CrossField Array and 218Sub-W speakers insuring the best coverage and intelligibility.
Working closely with O'Neill, Sutherland Sound designed the system to assure the best possible coverage and vocal intelligibility during football games, sporting events, commencements and various other municipal events.
Each speaker is secured to poles that are mounted to the structure using One Systems' mounting brackets specifically designed for these applications.
Along with the large sound system for the stadium, the installation also included auxiliary area sound reinforcement utilizing 106IM speakers for home concessions and rest room areas.
Braly Stadium's entire renovation, totaling near $700,000, which included new artificial turf, a new LED scoreboard and play clocks, was completed just days before the Division II Championship game.
"Weatherproofing, bandwidth, output, vocal intelligibility are what our speakers are all about," said One Systems president Doug MacCallum. "Our speakers work especially well in these high-noise, long throw situations. And it's always exciting to be a part of high-profile venues like this one."
