“It’s been around 12 weeks since the first reports emerged about a mysterious new virus, and here we are now on March 26, with the world completely turned upside down,” noted Joe Lamond, NAMM president and CEO, in an update that day. “Recent government-mandated closures of many aspects of our lives will either be seen as prudent or an overreach. Regardless, we are now left with only one task, and that is to move our industry forward, together.
Immediate access to SBA relief for our industry is a top priority for NAMM. Our team has worked with our industry partners in Washington D.C. to ensure that your voices were heard and that support for small business and our workforce would be an important part of any solution coming from the federal government. As of this writing, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”) is all but certain to pass and become law. Navigating it will be difficult, and we will do our very best to lead our members through this and provide a trusted place for the most up-to-date information and guidance for the relief forms at namm.org. Encouraging Music-Making: Good and bad things can happen in the same place, even at the same time. We are seeing this all over as the news media is filled with examples of isolated and quarantined people sharing music from balconies and with virtual concerts. As the state of Pennsylvania ordered the closing of all “non-essential” businesses last week, including the nearly 190 year-old Martin Guitar factory, our Chair, Chris Martin was, as usual, thinking of others. He wanted to make sure that in the middle of our heartbreaking business tasks we were also thinking of the selfless sacrifices being made by our healthcare professionals. Please join Chris and all NAMM members in a spontaneous music-making event planned for tomorrow at 6 pm ET. We’re calling it #MusicISLife. Let’s show the world that music is more than a business—to us, it’s the answer.
