MELBOURNE, Australia – Australian authorities used X-ray equipment to peer inside loudspeaker enclosures sent from Thailand and ended up making a record-breaking drug bust after finding 3,530 pounds of methamphetamine and 82 pounds of heroin inside.
The audio gear at first appeared to be Nexo PS15-R2 loudspeakers, but were later determined to be counterfeit, and Nexo confirmed the speakers did not originate with their factory, according to reports. Before heading to Australia, the shipment originated in Bangkok.
The Australia Border Force (ABF) was credited for making the bust, cited as the largest-ever drug bust for meth in the country’s history. The drugs had a total street value of about $835 million, according to reports.
