LAS VEGAS — A groundbreaking ceremony was set for 5 p.m. Nov. 13, 2017 for the new Las Vegas Stadium at a 62.5-acre parcel of land just west of I-15 and north of Russell Road, with close proximity to both Las Vegas’ McCarran Airport and the Las Vegas Strip.
The $1.9-billion project is slated to be ready in time for the 2020 NFL football season and will host the soon-to-be Las Vegas Raiders and the UNLV Rebels football team from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Oakland Raiders have received approval from the National Football League to relocate the franchise to Las Vegas.
The new stadium will feature state-of-the-art retractable doors and a clear ETFE glass-domed roof that offers the best of both worlds — an outdoor feel with a controlled, comfortable climate.
Taking a nod from the Raiders’ team colors, the stadium will be finished in silver and black, with huge, retractable side windows facing the famed Las Vegas Strip to the east.
For the design, Raiders team owner Mark Davis is said to have contracted with Kansas City, MO-based design firm Manica Architecture.
Besides the two football teams, the venue will also be able to host another two dozen or so additional events each year, ranging from soccer matches to truck rallies to concerts.
Capacity is projected at 65,000, and as much as 72,000 for larger events.
