RCF Boosts Sound at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO – An RCF SUB9007-AS subwoofer was recently installed at Arrowhead Stadium to replace its existing point source system. The stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs NFL football team, is recognized by Guinness as the loudest stadium in the world. In 2014, they achieved a world record 142.2 dB. John Horrell, principal with Nashville-based Durrell Sports, played a key role in the audio upgrade.

But, just like any other football team, the Chiefs were looking to make things even better for their fans. Having worked with Nashville-based Durrell Sports for 17 years, as their existing point source system in the stadium was showing its age, the Chiefs turned to Durrell and asked to survey the situation. What they found, according to Durrell principal John Horrell, was that the older system was fatigued and could not keep up with the current conditions at the stadium.

“We were faced with the task of providing ultra-low frequency in a small format due to space limitations, and still be sure that the speaker system would take the punishment demanded by the stadium,” says Horrell.

Having worked with RCF on a recent project at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Durrell turned to the RCF SUB9007-AS subwoofers for the solution. “We were looking for a way to enhance the current system with a more dynamic low frequency response.”

In providing the solution, “It’s not just about being loud,” says Horrell, “it’s about quality of reproduction and speaker longevity that makes our systems set standards for everyone else. The simple understanding of what the fans want is key. Just being loud creates fan frustration – being dynamic, that’s the secret to success.”

The RCF SUB9007-AS is a 7,200-watt, dual 21” subwoofer providing low frequency response down to 20 Hz.
“We wanted power and subsonic frequency reproduction like no other stadium,” Durrell says. “With the experience we’ve had with RCF, we knew the SUB9007-AS is a beast of a sub. And we knew that being self-amplified and self-protected it would keep up with the rest of the point source cluster.”

Durrell Sports is renowned for design and implementation of large stadium systems including work with NASCAR, MLB, NHL and NFL.
