KIGALI, Rwanda — To accompany an expansion of the Stade Amahoro here, with a seating capacity that will grow from 30,000 to 50,000 by 2016, Johannesburg, South Africa-based Prosound installed a distributed system consisting of 112IM full weather loudspeakers from One Systems.

Located in Eastern Kigali, the Stade Amahoro is the largest stadium in Rwanda. The multi-purpose venue hosts major sporting events and concerts throughout the year. It also provides the country with a place to congregate for all-important football matches and public meetings.
In 2011 the government embarked upon a multi-year renovation to the stadium which will expand seating from 30,000 to 50,000 by 2016. As a part of the renovation, the stadium required a permanent full range audio system for speeches, announcements and foreground music for all patrons.
Prosound, a leading professional audio and lighting distribution company headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, was called upon to design and install a new system that would meet specific requirements – acoustic performance, a weatherproof design that would provide longevity in a tropical climate and the ability to meet the budget, which was limited.
Long-time users of One Systems Direct Weather loudspeaker systems, ProSound decided to install a distributed system consisting of 112IM full weather loudspeakers.
“One Systems loudspeakers sound great – using them in this application was a no-brainer,” explains Terry Acres, Prosound founder. “They have a proven track record with our organization and we knew that they would get the job done for years to come.”
The stadium consists of open North, East and South grandstands with the West having two covered areas on either side of the central covered presidential/VIP stand. In total thirty-two 112IM 12-inch two way loudspeakers were installed throughout the stadium. The open grandstands feature 112IMs mounted at the bottom lip playing up and out, while the roofed stands had speakers placed at approximately 10m firing down.
“The advantage of this distributed design is that we have loudspeakers close to the listeners, so SPL levels do not need to overwhelm patrons, and the speakers that fire from the inside out make speeches on the field and the VIP podium highly intelligible,” Acres concludes. “Everyone is extremely happy with final design and outcome.”
