SYDNEY — Opera Australia, which garnered plaudits from last year’s introduction of the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour, a series of productions that take place on the harbor waterfront, recently presented Georges Bizet’s classic, Carmen. The audio included 3D processing from Iosono.

ERFURT, Germany — After successfully bringing 3D sound to the Sydney Opera House for Die tote Stadt in 2012, Iosono is elated to announce another world class project in the Australian metropolis. March 22 marks the premiere of Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour 2013, a unique open air production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen set against the splendid backdrop of Sydney harbor and the Sydney Opera House.
The production by Opera Australia is spectacular on all levels. The stage measuring 32 by 24 meters resembles a bullfighting ring and appears to float on Sydney Harbour. With dazzling costumes and firework effects, the audience experience is rounded off with a high quality sound system by Iosono. “It’s impossible to describe how tactile and realistic Iosono’s spatial audio processor renders the orchestra and singers,” says Tony David Cray, sound designer for Opera on Sydney Harbour.
The system allows for a natural localization of the orchestra and all singers. Iosono’s Spatial Audio Processor and 20 line array speakers will fill the harbour with crystal clear sound, corresponding to the singers’ actual position. “We’re very proud to be a part of this project. A top production like this needs first class sound and we’re convinced that Carmen will be a pleasure for the eyes and ears of the audience,” added Olaf Stepputat, CEO of Iosono, shortly before the first show. All 3,500 listeners were expected to enjoy a stable location of the sounds on stage without any impairment of the stunning stage design, as the speakers are placed on the floor in front of the quay wall.
Carmen premiered March 22 and runs through April 12, 2013. Tickets and further information on Carmen and Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour are available on www.operaonsydneyharbour.com.au.
