Tannoy VQ Loudspeakers Provide Focus to Youth Chapel

DJL Audio Video Specialists Specify Tannoy VQ for new construction at Calvary Chapel High Desert.

Calvary Chapel High Desert located in Hesperia, California, recently completed construction of a new youth building that houses all Sunday school rooms and activities as well as a teen/college worship space.

The church leadership tapped DJL Audio/Video Specialists from San Dimas, California, to design and install a new system for the youth chapel.

“They were looking for a high end system that wouldn’t break the bank,” Don Cicchetti, chief designer for DJL explains.

“We looked at a lot of options and were extremely impressed with Tannoy’s VQ Series loudspeakers – they sound fantastic and provided the features the room required.”

VQ Series is a large-format, point-source modular system designed to suit applications where precise directional control, outstanding sonic performance, high SPL and low distortion output are critical.

The Youth Chapel is a rectangular room that seats just under 100 with a raised stage centered along one of the long walls.

Cicchetti ultimately specified a center array comprised of two VQ 60 loudspeakers that were flown from the ceiling, centered at the front of the stage. Two VS 18DR subwoofers were mounted to the ceiling directly behind the cluster for additional low end. The array was hung with a custom fabricated mounting system provided by DJL. The loudspeakers are powered by QSC CX Series amplifiers located offstage in the green room.

“Because it’s a youth chapel it hosts live music during most of the worship services,” Cicchetti adds. “We needed a system that could handle very high levels while still providing crystal clear sound. This really delivered.”

Cicchetti analyzed the sound system using Terrasond’s Audio Toolbox with Terralink software. He then optimized the system with Tannoy’s VNET SC1 System Controller and VNET software. VNET is a proprietary network protocol for DSP control of loudspeaker systems. From the VNET application all loudspeaker DSP parameters can be controlled including crossover/delay, EQ, Gain and levels – providing all of the signal processing the system required.

“After a lot of scientific analysis we applied the ultimate test – our ears,” Cicchetti continues. “It sounded great and the client loved it. The head pastor, the worship leader, and the youth leaders absolutely love the system.”
