NEA Webinar on Reopening Arts Venues Includes Cautious Optimism from Dr. Fauci

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Endowment for the Arts hosted a free webinar on how arts organizations can reopen their venues in 2021. The March 23 webinar featured comments by NIH’s NIAID director Dr. Anthony Fauci.

While Dr. Fauci emphasized that “this is no guarantee,” he deemed it plausible that arts venues could be operating at full capacity by autumn.

“We may still need to wear masks,” he cautioned. But current trends point to “70 to 85 percent” of the population getting vaccinated “by late summer or early fall.”  If that “broad umbrella” of protection against Covid-19 is achieved, Dr. Fauci added, the virus could reach a “dead end” preventing further community spread.

NEA conducted the webinar to help share the findings from their Jan. 2021 report, The Art of Reopening: A Guide to Current Practices Among Arts Organizations During Covid-19. Along with tips for reopening, that report presented nine case studies. To download the report, go to arts.gov/impact/research/publications/art-reopening.
